The Ford 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine, commonly referred to by its engine code YN2S, is used in the Ford Transit 2.0L and the 2.0L high-output Ford Ranger. This engine provides great performance and efficiency, but it is known for some widely-reported reliability problems, especially related to the wet timing belt and head gasket failures.
Common YN2S Engine Failures
One of the most frequent issues with the YN2S is timing belt failure. The belt runs internally in the engine, lubricated by engine oil. Over time, poor oil condition, incorrect servicing intervals or using the wrong oil specification can cause accelerated belt degradation. When the belt breaks, catastrophic top-end damage often follows.
The YN2S engine is also known for head gasket failure, particularly when overheating or belt failure occurs. If the engine loses timing, the pistons continue moving while the valves stop, resulting in piston-to-valve contactand significant damage.
Why Camshaft Damage is Common in the YN2S
Unlike older style engines, the camshafts in the YN2S cannot be removed from the cradle. The cam lobes are pressed onto the shaft. When the belt fails, the shock load transfers through the rockers and into the camshafts, causing them to shift and lose phase. Once this happens, the cam module cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

FAQs
Q: What vehicles use the YN2S engine?
A: The YN2S engine is found in the Ford Transit 2.0L and the Ford Ranger 2.0L high turbo models.
Q: Why does the YN2S timing belt fail early?
A: Belt failure is commonly caused by poor servicing intervals, oil contamination or incorrect oil specification.
Q: Can the camshafts be repaired individually?
A: No. The lobes are pressed on, and any misalignment makes the module unusable.
Q: Can I buy components individually?
A: Yes - ETP offers complete kits or the individual parts depending on the damage.
