Common P5AT Engine Problems and Solutions

The P5AT engine is known for its durability, but like any engine, it has its share of issues. Many P5AT engine problems stem from cylinder head failures, oil system defects and camshaft misalignment. If left unaddressed, these issues can lead to severe engine damage. Below, we outline the most common P5AT engine problems and how to fix them.
Cylinder Head Issues
One of the most frequently observed P5AT engine problems is gasket failure. The P5AT cylinder head is prone to warping and becoming soft over time, which often results in compression loss or overheating. In most cases, the head will require reconditioning or complete replacement.
Another issue is with the P5AT camshafts, which use a pressed lobe design. A timing failure can cause the pistons to strike the valves, leading to camshaft lobe misalignment. The only solution is to replace the camshafts.
The rocker assembly is another weak point in the P5AT engine. Since the lifters are sealed in their cradle, missed servicing or poor oil quality can lead to noisy rockers. Unfortunately, the lifters are non-removable, meaning the entire rocker assembly must be replaced if this issue arises.
Oil Pickup Failures
The P5AT engine uses a vane-type oil pump, which has been linked to several failures. One common P5AT engine problem occurs during oil changes - if the oil is not refilled immediately after draining, the oil pickup pipe may lose suction. Once this happens, the system must be bled to restore oil circulation.
Additionally, many P5AT oil pumps suffer from vane fractures, which cause debris to clog the oil pickup pipe. This blockage often triggers the oil warning light and, if not addressed immediately, can lead to catastrophic engine damage due to oil starvation.
An oil pump upgrade is available that replaces the vane-type pump, significantly improving reliability and preventing these failures.
Oil Squirter Issues
Blocked or malfunctioning P5AT piston oil squirters are another common P5AT engine problem. When the internal valve fails, the oil spray responsible for cooling the pistons ceases to function, increasing the risk of piston overheating and seizure. To prevent this, regular inspection and maintenance of the oil squirters are essential.
Preventing P5AT Engine Problems
Many P5AT engine problems can be avoided with regular maintenance, timely oil changes and using high-quality replacement parts. If you're experiencing P5AT engine issues, addressing them early can prevent costly repairs and extend the engine’s lifespan.
